On 18 September 2021, Durbanville Squash Club hosted a doubles tournament fundraiser in support of Adopt a Vision, a charity which provides support for the essential educational needs of underprivileged children.
The charity is run by Karin Greyling and Liana Venter.
The event in September was a resounding success. A total of 32 players entered to play in the Great Gatsby themed squash tournament. It was a busy Saturday morning with a lot of excitement amongst the players, some of whom had never played doubles before.
The total amount raised for the charity event was R15000
Adopt a Vision have identified millions of needs for underprivileged kids, but they made a decision to start small, but dream big! The plan forward is to focus mainly on the assistance to basic educational needs such as school funds, school uniforms, food etc.
The charity currently has more or less 150 children in grades 1 – 3 respectively, of which only a few have the privilege of eating a decent meals throughout the day. They are aiming to assist by providing a proper meal once or twice a week.
The idea of a clothing bank is also a dream of theirs, provided they can eventually generate enough funds to do so. In the rural areas Adopt a Vision also identified 5 children in need of school fees as government schools will not accept them due to varying circumstances. It is their goal to also assist kids in this situation.
One of the schools being assisted by Adopt a Vision is Hanover Destiny Academy, a private school in Hanover. The school is registered at the Department of Education as a school and with SARS as a non-profit organisation (NPO).
Hanover Academy uses the ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) curriculum with additional modules to ensure that the curriculum is CAPS compliant. The benefits of AEE includes
- Personalised System of Instruction (PSI)
- Academic Excellence
- Individualised Instruction
- Mastery Based Learning
- Self-Paced Learning
- Biblical Values
- Character Building
- Reasoning Skills and Critical Thinking
- Computer Enhanced Learning
- Diagnostic Testing
In short, each learner works at their own pace to ensure that they have completely mastered each skill. For the advanced learner, this means that they can complete the curriculum sooner and start with tertiary learning at a younger age. For the challenged learner, it means that the pressure, which usually comes from being last in a group, is removed and they are rewarded for what they can do.
Unfortunately, what is lacking is subsidised school fees. The school receives no subsidies from government or private sector funding. Presently, school fees range from R1250 – R1550 per month per learner, which is rather steep in the current economic climate. Hanover Private School would be able to reduce their school fees if they could get funding from external sources and they could provide education to learners with no funding at all.
As a registered NPO, donations given will receive a Section 18 receipt – this means that the donation is tax-deductible for businesses and individuals.
Adopt a Vision therefore seeks support in not only running the kind of fun tournament hosted by Durbanville Squash Club, but also support from individuals and businesses individually through donations on a monthly, annual or ad hoc basis.
Adopt a Vision will provide each and every donor with a quarterly financial report and welcomes direct contact or or a visit to the school you are supporting to experience first-hand what they are doing on a daily basis.
Sponsorship methods include but are not limited to:
- Financial donation in the form of once of or monthly debit order
- Donations of clothing
- Donations of food
- Donations of school supplies
